When people think about drug driving, illegal substances are usually what comes to mind first. But a significant share of impaired driving involves entirely legal medication — prescription drugs, and even some over-the- counter remedies, that carry a genuine effect on a driver's ability to concentrate, react, or stay alert. Certain painkillers, anti-anxiety medication, some antidepressants, strong cold and flu remedies, and even some antihistamines can cause drowsiness, slowed reaction time, or reduced concentration — effects that are easy to underestimate because the medication was prescribed by a doctor or bought over a pharmacy counter, and doesn't feel the same as being "under the influence" in the way alcohol does.

The practical habit worth building is a simple one: read the label. Many medications carry an explicit warning about driving or operating machinery, and it's worth taking that seriously rather than assuming it's just standard small print. If you're starting a new medication, or increasing a dose, it's worth checking with your pharmacist or GP specifically about driving, especially in the first few days while your body adjusts.

This isn't about avoiding medication you actually need — it's about being honest with yourself about how it affects you personally, which can be different from how it affects the average person the leaflet was written for. If you notice drowsiness, blurred concentration, or slower reactions after taking something, that's your own evidence that driving isn't a good idea right then, regardless of what the label technically permits, and it's worth trusting that evidence over how capable you feel in the moment.

Being safe on this one costs very little — a taxi, a lift, or simply waiting until the effects have worn off — and it protects you and everyone else on the road at the same time. It's worth a two-minute conversation with your pharmacist next time you collect a repeat prescription, just to check whether anything has changed about how that particular medication might affect your driving, especially if a dose or a combination of medicines has recently changed. It's a genuinely easy question to ask, and pharmacists are used to being asked it.

Nuair a smaoiníonn daoine ar thiomáint faoi thionchar drugaí, is substaintí neamhdhleathacha is túisce a thagann chun cuimhne de ghnáth. Ach baineann sciar suntasach de thiomáint lagaithe le cógais atá go hiomlán dleathach — cógais oideas, agus fiú roinnt leigheasanna thar an gcuntar, a iompraíonn éifeacht fhíor ar chumas tiománaí tiúchan, freagairt, nó fanacht airdeallach.

Is féidir le painphiollairí áirithe, cógais frith-imní, roinnt frith-dhúlagráin, leigheasanna láidre slaghdáin agus fliú, agus fiú roinnt frithhiostaimíní codlatacht, am freagartha moillithe, nó tiúchan laghdaithe a chur faoi deara — éifeachtaí atá éasca a mheas faoina mbun toisc gur oideas dochtúra a bhí ann, nó gur ceannaíodh thar chuntar cógaslainne é, agus nach mbraitheann sé mar an gcéanna le bheith "faoi thionchar" mar a bhraitheann alcól.

Is é an nós praiticiúil is fiú a chothú ná an lipéad a léamh. Iompraíonn go leor cógas rabhadh sonrach faoi thiomáint nó faoi oibriú innealra, agus is fiú é a ghlacadh dáiríre seachas glacadh leis nach bhfuil ann ach mionchló caighdeánach. Má tá tú ag tosú ar chógas nua, nó ag méadú dáileog, is fiú a sheiceáil le do chógaslannaí nó do dhochtúir teaghlaigh go sonrach faoi thiomáint, go háirithe sna chéad chúpla lá agus do chorp ag socrú isteach.

Ní faoi sheachaint cógas atá ag teastáil uait i ndáiríre atá seo — is faoi bheith macánta leat féin faoin gcaoi a ndéanann sé difear duitse go pearsanta, rud a d'fhéadfadh a bheith difriúil ón gcaoi a ndéanann sé difear don ghnáthdhuine dar scríobhadh an bhileog. Má thugann tú faoi deara codlatacht, tiúchan doiléir, nó freagairtí níos moille tar éis rud éigin a ghlacadh, is fianaise duit féin é sin nach smaoineamh maith é tiomáint díreach ansin, is cuma cad a cheadaíonn an lipéad go teicniúil, agus is fiú brath ar an bhfianaise sin thar an mbealach a mhothaíonn tú cumasach ag an nóiméad.

Ní chosnaíonn sé mórán a bheith sábháilte ar an gceann seo — tacsaí, síob, nó fanacht go dtí go n-imíonn na héifeachtaí — agus cosnaíonn sé tú féin agus gach duine eile ar an mbóthar ag an am céanna. Is fiú comhrá dhá nóiméad le do chógaslannaí an chéad uair eile a bhaileoidh tú oideas athnuachana, díreach chun a sheiceáil ar athraigh aon rud faoin gcaoi a bhféadfadh an cógas áirithe sin difear a dhéanamh do do thiomáint, go háirithe má athraíodh dáileog nó teaglaim chógas le déanaí. Is ceist an-éasca í a chur, agus tá cógaslannaithe cleachtaithe uirthi a fhiafraí díobh.
