A road safety message from Sunshine 106.8.
Drug driving detection has become a much bigger part of Garda enforcement in recent years, and the message underneath it is a simple one: driving under the influence of illegal drugs carries exactly the same seriousness, and exactly the same real-world risk, as driving over the alcohol limit.
Different drugs affect the body in different ways, but the common thread is that they interfere with the basic skills driving depends on — reaction time, judgement of speed and distance, concentration, and the ability to respond quickly to something unexpected. Some drugs slow reactions down. Others create a false sense of confidence that leads to genuinely reckless decisions, like excessive speed or dangerous overtaking. Neither effect is compatible with being safely in control of a vehicle.
Roadside testing for drugs has become far more common at checkpoints, and it's not limited to any particular time of day or type of road — Garda operations run throughout the year, on motorways and rural roads alike. The idea that drug driving is somehow less likely to be caught than drink driving isn't accurate anymore, and it was never a good basis for a decision that puts other people's lives at risk in the first place.
The message here doesn't need to be complicated: if you've taken an illegal drug, you are not fit to drive, regardless of how capable you feel. There's no safe threshold, no rule of thumb, no amount of time that reliably makes it fine. The only genuinely safe choice is not to drive at all, and to make other arrangements to get where you're going.
It's also worth saying that the risk here isn't only to the driver. A car is a shared space, and every passenger, along with every other road user nearby, is exposed to exactly the same impaired reactions and judgement. That's a responsibility that doesn't go away just because a driver feels, in the moment, that they're handling it fine, and it's worth every passenger feeling able to say so, and to ask for another way home instead. Teachtaireacht um shábháilteacht ar bhóithre ó Sunshine 106.8.
Tá braith ar thiomáint faoi thionchar drugaí tar éis éirí ina chuid i bhfad níos mó d'fhorfheidhmiú na nGardaí le blianta beaga anuas, agus tá an teachtaireacht faoi bhun na fírinne sin simplí: iompraíonn tiomáint faoi thionchar drugaí neamhdhleathacha díreach an tromchúis chéanna, agus díreach an riosca fíor chéanna sa saol dáiríre, le tiomáint os cionn na teorann alcóil.
Déanann drugaí éagsúla difear don chorp ar bhealaí éagsúla, ach is í an snáithe choitianta go gcuireann siad isteach ar na scileanna bunúsacha a bhraitheann tiomáint orthu — am freagartha, breithiúnas luais agus faid, tiúchan, agus an cumas freagairt go tapa do rud éigin gan choinne. Moillíonn roinnt drugaí freagairtí. Cruthaíonn cinn eile brath bréagach muiníne a fhágann le cinntí fíor-dhainséaracha, cosúil le luas iomarcach nó scoitheadh contúirteach. Níl ceachtar éifeacht comhoiriúnach le bheith i rialú sábháilte ar fheithicil.
Tá tástáil bóthair do dhrugaí tar éis éirí i bhfad níos coitianta ag seiceadóireachtaí, agus níl sí teoranta d'am ar leith den lá nó do chineál bóthair ar leith — reáchtálann na Gardaí oibríochtaí i rith na bliana, ar mhótarbhealaí agus ar bhóithre tuaithe araon. Níl an smaoineamh go bhfuil sé níos lú dóchúil go ngabhfar tiomáint faoi thionchar drugaí ná tiomáint faoi thionchar óil cruinn a thuilleadh, agus níor bhonn maith riamh é do chinneadh a chuireann saol daoine eile i mbaol sa chéad áit.
Ní gá go mbeadh an teachtaireacht anseo casta: má thóg tú druga neamhdhleathach, níl tú in oiriúint le tiomáint, is cuma cé chomh cumasach a mhothaíonn tú. Níl aon tairseach shábháilte, aon riail scairte, aon mhéid ama a dhéanann sé ceart go hiontaofa. Is é an t-aon rogha sábháilte i ndáiríre gan tiomáint ar chor ar bith, agus socruithe eile a dhéanamh chun an áit a bhfuil tú ag dul air a shroicheadh.
Is fiú a rá freisin nach ort féin amháin an riosca anseo. Is spás roinnte é carr, agus tá gach paisinéir, mar aon le gach úsáideoir bóthair eile in aice láimhe, nochta do na freagairtí agus don bhreithiúnas laghdaithe céanna go díreach. Is freagracht í sin nach n-imíonn ach toisc go mothaíonn tiománaí, ag an nóiméad, go bhfuil sé/sí á láimhseáil go maith, agus is fiú go mbraitheadh gach paisinéir in ann é sin a rá, agus bealach eile abhaile a iarraidh ina áit.
