Every day, hundreds of thousands of journeys happen safely across Dublin — to school, to work, to see family. Most of the time, we don't think about road safety at all. We just get where we're going.

But every year in Ireland, that ordinary routine goes wrong for some families, and it never quite goes back to normal for them again.

Here's something worth remembering: nobody sets out to be part of a collision. It's rarely one big mistake. It's usually a handful of small ones stacking up — a bit too much speed, a glance at a phone, a following distance that's a little too tight, a decision to drive when you're more tired than you realised.

And it isn't about pointing the finger at any one group of road users. Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists — everybody shares the road, and everybody has a part to play in keeping it safe. A driver who slows down near a school. A cyclist with working lights. A pedestrian who waits those extra few seconds for the green man. None of it is complicated, and none of it costs very much. But together, these small decisions are what keep people alive.

Over the coming months, Sunshine 106.8 will bring you a series of short road safety messages like this one — practical information about the things that genuinely make a difference: speed, distraction, drink and drug driving, fatigue, and looking out for the people around you on the road, whoever they are and however they're travelling.

The aim isn't to lecture anyone. It's to give you something small and useful for your next journey — because road safety isn't somebody else's job. It's everybody's, all of the time, on every journey.

So take a second before you set off today. Check your mirrors, check your speed, check that you're genuinely fit to drive. It's such a small thing to do, and it might be the thing that gets you, or somebody else, home safe tonight. That's exactly what this series is here for — a couple of minutes, every so often, as a reminder rather than a lecture.
